How the math works

Volume is length times average width times depth, all in inches, which gives cubic inches. One US gallon is exactly 231 cubic inches, so dividing converts the pour to gallons, and the waste factor scales the result up to cover mixing loss and absorption into the wood.

For irregular river channels, measuring the width every foot and averaging gets you within a few percent, which the waste factor comfortably absorbs.

How much epoxy do I need for a river table?
Multiply the river channel length by its average width and pour depth in inches, then divide by 231 to convert cubic inches to gallons. Add 5 to 10 percent for mixing loss and wood soak-in. A typical 6 foot river table with a 6 inch wide, 1.5 inch deep channel needs about 3 gallons.
Does the calculator account for resin and hardener together?
Yes. The result is the total mixed volume you need. Check your product's mix ratio (1:1, 2:1, etc.) to split that total between resin and hardener when buying kits.
How deep can I pour epoxy in one go?
Standard tabletop epoxy is limited to about 1/8 to 1/4 inch per pour. Deep-pour formulas allow 2 inches or more in a single pour. Exceeding the rated depth traps heat and can cause yellowing, cracking, or a runaway cure.
